EGR VALVE

The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve permits a controlled amount of exhaust gas to combine with the fuel/air mixture entering the engine. The exhaust gas reduces the combustion temperature as it is burned again. This in turn diminishes the quantity of oxides of nitrogen, a harmful emission, produced. EGR valves are present on all 1973 and later U.S. vehicles.
